How To Get A Job In Canada As A Newcomer

Finding work in Canada is not easy, especially if you are a new immigrant.  Most employers may require you to have Canadian work experience which you most likely do not have. Aside this, the job search process of preparing your resume, applying, networking and interviewing for the roles you want may not be the one you are used to. This, in itself, is a full time jobs. 1. Prepare a Canadian-Style Resume and Cover Letter

The requirements for workforce and job application process differ from country to country.. And this applies to the format of the resume. As a new immigrant, you need to have a Canadian-style resume. A Canadian-style resume is recommended to be no more than 2 pages. Your resume should include your most relevant work experience that relates to the job you are applying for. 2. Refine Your LinkedIn Account

One of the first thing you should do when you arrive in Canada is to change your location on your LinkedIn profile to a Canadian one. This is because recruiters looking for candidates on LinkedIn always favour local candidates over those who are overseas. You can even do this before you arrive in Canada. In addition, ensure your LinkedIn account is up to date with the most current information.


3. Join a Professional Immigrant Network

Getting a job might require you to network a lot before you get hired. One way to do that before you arrive is to join online local community groups like an immigrant-led professional association in the area you are planning to live. Most of these organizations are formed by employers and other professionals in your field of work. They can help you build your career by surrounding you with other professionals who understand your experience, expertise, and the labour market.

4. Search for a Mentoring Program

Another great way to find a job is through mentoring program. Mentoring programs match you with an established professional in Canada for a one-on-one, occupation-specific, mentoring relationship. Most of the settlement organizations offer this program. A strong mentoring partnership can help you build vital professional connections and help you gain labour market insights in your respective field. So, research the mentoring programs in your destination city to become a “mentee” and find a mentor in your professional field.

5. Get Relevant Accreditation (if required)

Before you arrive in Canada, research what extra accreditation or education you may need to successfully transition into your career field in Canada.  You may need to take extra courses or write an exam to validate your credentials.  If you are not sure of what accreditation you need, you can check Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials (CICIC). 6. Register for Settlement Services

One key resources available for new immigrant is the settlement service. Some of these organizations offer free programs to help you find work faster. Settlement organizations offer a variety of services to help new immigrants settle in their new location. They are available in every province and territory. These services they offer include

  • assistance in finding a place to live,
  • help in finding a job or starting a business,
  • referral to language classes,
  • information about community services, such as mentoring, and

So, as soon as you arrive in Canada, register with the settlement organizations in your location.

7. Explore Volunteer Work

Some new immigrants have secured through volunteering. Volunteer opportunity can be an immediate way to gain experience when you first get here. Focus on volunteer opportunities that are relevant to your skill set and career. Dedicating a few hours a week of volunteer experience can help you understand the Canadian work culture and practice your technical skills.  It also serves as a good opportunity to get Canadian references.
