How To Apply For MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill

The application for the MasterCard Foundation Scholars program 2021 at McGill for African students is now open. This is a yearly scholars program targeted at African students. A central goal of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is to create a globally educated and highly qualified group of future leaders, who, upon graduation, can return to Africa to help foster the region’s development. Toward these ends, McGill complements Scholars’ education with a comprehensive support system that includes mentorship, tailored support services, community service opportunities and sustained programming relevant to their personal development. This article will show you how to apply for MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill.

Also, scholars receive guidance and funding for two internships in their home countries during their studies. These internships aim to sustain the Scholars’ connection with their home countries and build a path toward meaningful employment post-graduation.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for consideration for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Master’s Program at McGill, you must:

  1.  Be a citizen of and have lived a significant part of your life in a Sub-Saharan African Country (see List of Eligible Countries);
  2. Be admissible to one of the eligible programs at McGill University (see Program List here);
  3. Have never registered for / completed any graduate studies;
  4. Be nominated by a current McGill Professor or Staff Member from the department you wish to apply to (see PDF icon Nomination form);
  5. Have an exceptional record of service and activity in your school and / or community;
  6. Have an intent to return to your country immediately upon the completion of your degree with the goal of transforming your community through social and economic development;
  7. Also, demonstrate that your financial status is in the lowest two quin-tiles of your country;

Most importantly, the applicant must be less than 35 years old at the time of application.

How To Apply For MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill

The application period for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program – Masters Studies (Non-Thesis) for Fall 2021 is now OPEN.

Please note: This application is for MASTER’s (non-thesis) applicants from Africa only.

Read the steps below carefully if you meet the eligibility criteria:

  1. Prospective applicants can find the full list of MCF eligible programs here. Once a program of interest has been identified, the applicant must consult the departmental requirements as well as the standard graduate admission requirements, to verify that they are eligible to apply.
  2. Please note that meeting the minimum graduate admissions requirements does not guarantee nomination for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program or admission to McGill University. If the minimum requirements are met, the applicant may request nomination from the department via email. This request should have the following information enclosed:
    • University Transcript
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • Short Personal Statement (max. 350 words).
  3.  The nomination made by the department acts as a verification step. If an applicant has been nominated, they will receive a prompt to create an account on the uApply portal and share the username with the nominating department. The applicant MUST wait until they have been nominated before creating an account in order for the application to be considered for the MCF scholarship.
    Please note that nomination does not guarantee admission to McGill University.

You will find below other details of the application process:

  1. Once nominated (department must send the completed nomination form to mcf-scholars@mcgill.ca), the applicant will receive a fee waiver and should complete the admission application in uApply. Then, they should upload the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Application Form, sponsor letter and bank statement to the uApply checklist.
  2. The applicant should request their Referee complete the MCFSP Recommendation form and return the completed form by email to mcf-scholars@mcgill.ca .
  3. Once the department receives all of the necessary documents, the department will review the application.
    •  Once the applicant receives admission to their program of study, their MCFSP application is pre-screened. If selected at the pre-screening stage, the application moves on to the MCFSP Selection Committee for review.
    • If the applicant doesn’t get admission, they are no longer eligible for the scholarship.
  4. Successful applicants will be notified in April 2021 if they have been selected for the 2021 Cohort of the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program at McGill University.

Please note: There will be no further Undergraduate Admissions to the Scholars Program at McGill.

    • A program in the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences – October 30th 2020
    • Public Health – November 1st 2020
    • Epidemiology, Biostatistics & Occupational Health – November 15th 2020
    • Social Work – November 15th 2020
    • Electrical Engineering – December 1st 2020
    • Architecture – December 1st 2020
    • Political Science – December 1st 2020
