Over the last few months, Netflix has gradually added some Nollywood movies (or Nigerian movies as some will call it) to their platform. The list is growing each day. So, we have decided to highlight some of our favorite Nollywood movies currently available on Netflix. Light in the Dark

The Nollywood movie is a Romance thriller which stars Rita Dominic, Joke Silva, Kalu Ikeagwu, Saidi Balogun. A terrifying home invasion shatters a couple’s happy family life and brings their marriage to the brink. This thriller, “Light in Darkness” tells the story of how far two people are willing to go to keep their marriage together. Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons

This is one of my favorite Nollywood  movies on Netflix. Four rich men seduce powerful women and get contracts from the political elite. They even steal from the rich, give to the poor and have sex with the hottest women in town. They face their biggest challenge when they antagonize a notorious and corrupt politician< The politician plans on demolishing a village to build a shopping mall. The four men scheme to save the poor people of the village.

93 Days

Steve Gukas‘s 93 Days is a blockbuster Nollywood movie that portrays the Nigeria’s excellence. This Nigerian movie looks back at with pride at how Nigeria prevented the outbreak of the Ebola disease. The film documents the triumph against Ebola and salutes the heroes of that battle. The movie is not great because of what it stands for, but how well it told that story. It was beautifully shot and well-acted with lead Bimbo Akintola delivering an excellent performance.

Moms At War

“Moms at War”, directed by Omoni Oboli, is a Nollywood movie that is about two mothers who live in the same neighborhood, but hate each other. One felt that the other was a village girl who just got into money and is not fit to live in the same neighborhood with them. But both their kids coincidentally attend the same school. There was a competition that was done for the kids, and both were the top of their class. It comes down to one of them winning the competition and the mothers just go crazy, doing all sort of antics. This is a story of friendship, sisterhood, and bonding in spite of everything.

October 1

This is a Nollywood Movie thriller Kunle Afolayan.  October 1 is one of his best Nigerian movies and one of the best from the last decade. October 1 is mainly about solving a series of gruesome murders that’s been happening in Akote, a remote town in Western Nigeria. The film continually poses questions about colonialism and its long term effects on the fragile democracy of young Nigeria. Working with trusted collaborators,  Afolayan creates a gorgeous picture reminiscent of ’60’s Nigeria.

The adoring couple elects to test the strength of their marriage when they run against each other for the office of state governor.

The CEO

Five top level staff of a company are selected for a retreat where the new CEO of a global company will be chosen. What starts off as cordial soon goes sour as they attempt to outdo one another to be named The CEO. In “The CEO“, a  group of executives heads to a retreat to pick the firm’s new CEO until they find themselves in a contest to stay alive.

Hakkunde

This is a story of a young graduate who battles everything on his journey to self discovery and actualization.   Hakkunde is characterized by actions and reactions that defines the everyday Nigerian society, with its ups and downs. The Nollywood movie focuses on the life of a job hunting graduate “Akande” who found himself in totality while searching for a job, and a better life. It highlights the merits of steadfastness, humility and self-denial and also espouses the gains of harnessing opportunities.

Anchor Baby

Anchor Baby is a Nollywood movie about an illegal immigrant couple from Nigeria on a quest to create a better life for their unborn child. Their dream is to have their baby in the United States in order for the baby to become a US citizen. A Nigerian couple living in the U.S. face agonizing fallout when they defy deportation orders with the hopes of giving their unborn child citizenship.

The Delivery Boy

Written and directed by ace cinematographer, Adekunle Nodash Adejuyigbe, the award-winning thriller tells the profound story of an orphaned boy who runs into a young prostitute on a fated night. The pair contend with their pasts before the night ends. It stars Jammal Ibrahim and Jemima Osunde.
