Atlantic Immigration Pilot Work Permit Application Goes Online

Living in Canada

One of the ways to migrate to Canada is through the Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIP) program. AIP  is a fast-track immigration program that allows employers in Canada’s four Atlantic provinces — Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island — to hire foreign nationals for jobs they have not been able to fill locally. Effective 17 August, 2020, the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Work Permit application goes online. Canada’s immigration department (IRCC) is now accepting online applications for work permits under the AIP program. However, IRCC will continue to receive paper applications until September 1, 2020.

The AIP offers a pathway to permanent residence for foreign nationals with a job offer in one of Canada’s four Atlantic provinces. Before applying for permanent immigration, candidates need to receive a work permit so as to work legally in Canada.

The AIP Program

The AIP offers two programs for foreign skilled workers and one program for international student graduates:. These include:

  1. Atlantic High-Skilled Program,
  2. the Atlantic Intermediate-Skilled Program, and
  3. Atlantic International Graduate Program.

Skilled workers need at least one year of prior work experience in an occupation that is related to the job offer. International student graduates do not need to meet this same requirement, but the job offer should be full-time for at least one year and classified as a skill-level of 0, A, B, or C.

In addition, candidates need a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) language level of 4 in all areas for English and French,. The test results cannot be more than two years old.

Requirements for the Atlantic Immigration Pilot work permit

In order to get the required work permit, candidates need the following:

  • valid job offer from an employer in one of the Atlantic provinces;
  • referral letter from the province; and
  • commitment to apply for permanent residence within 90 days of the temporary work permit application.

Once the candidates meet all these requirements, they may be eligible for a one-year employer-specific work permit. In addition, the foreign national’s partner may be eligible for an Open Work Permit for Spouses and Common-Law Partners.

Employer’s Responsibility

Once the candidate accepts a job offer, the employer will connect the candidate with a designated settlement service provider organization. This organization will perform a needs assessment and work with the candidate to develop a settlement plan. Also, the employers are required to support the long-term integration of newcomers. The focus is to enable the candidate settle permanently into their new homes.

After receiving the temporary work permit, the foreign national must then submit the permanent residence application within 90 days.

In subsequent article, we will write about how to apply for the AIP program.
