6 books to add to your library

books to add to your library

How is your week going? If you are in Calgary, I’m sure you are thankful for the Chinook wind this week, giving us a break from the days of snow! If you read my last article to the end, I promised to share a list of books I recommend. Now, when you read a lot of books, it gets harder and harder to recommend only a handful but I will do my best. In no particular order, here is a list of 6 books to add to your library. There is something for everyone here.

Shoe Dog by Phil Knight (non-fiction)

I hear some of you say “huh, who is that?”. Phil Knight is the mastermind behind the brand Nike. This book details how he started his business, his dealings with suppliers in the East, how he funded and persevered into making Nike what it is today. It is such an insightful read. This is one of my top books to add to your library. So, I recommend this book wholeheartedly, especially if you are a budding entrepreneur.

Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid (historical fiction)

I listened to the audio version of this book and I recommend you do the same if you can. The production of the audiobook was so good, I could visually picture the scenes as the narrator read the book. I was about a third way into the book when I accepted that the story was not based on a true life story but fiction- this is how captivating this book is. The book tells the story of a 1970s rock band and their beautiful lead singer. We follow the band from their conception and ultimately up to their breakup. The book details the roller-coaster in-between. There is nothing predictable about this plot.

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee (historical fiction)

This book is another gripping book. The plot details the lives of four generations of a Korean family in Japan. It details the dynamics between the Koreans and the Japanese at the time and difficult an average Korean family face with raising a family or even living in Japan. I experienced a lot of emotion reading this, sadness, joy, trepidation, suspense and so on. It is such a well written historical fiction book, albeit a bit of a big book to get through – however, it will be worth it.

Bad Blood

Secret and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou (non-fiction) – just thinking about this book renders me speechless because of the sheer effrontery and audacity of perpetrators. The book documents the rise and collapse of a multi-billion dollar startup, Theranos. The book details the antics and lengths the founder of Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes, went through to hide the fact that the technology backed by seasoned investors did not work. Your jaws will drop reading this one.

The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls (non-fiction)

This book is about the life of the writer, Jeanette Walls and how her parents raised her snd her siblings. Imagine being raised in abject poverty… and then you grow up to find out your mum inherited an oil field that was worth more than a million dollars but chose not to sell it to cater to her family because you don’t sell land? Sigh! My heart broke so many times reading this book but I was glad to see the kids grew up to be okay.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides (fiction)

It is going to be so hard talking about this book without a spoiler, but I will do my best. The Silent Patient is a fantastic psychological thriller that gripped me up until the last page. The story is about a famous painter who shoots her husband and becomes mute following this incident. The case intrigues all that hear about it, including a psychiatrist that makes it his own mission to try to heal her.
