We are breaking from the norm today with this article on the movie review of The Departed. As you probably know, we dedicate Fridays to recommending some movies we believe you can watch on weekends. If you like “Casino” or “Goodfellas”, you will certainly like “The Departed”. The movie – originally inspired by “Infernal Affairs”- is a ferociously entertaining film as described by a respected movie critic.
For me, the 2006 movie directed by Martin Scorsese is an intriguing plot twist of different stories fused into one. Martin did an excellent job in bringing together multiple A-star actors and their story lines without overshadowing each other. Not many directors in Hollywood can do that. Despite being a 14 year-old movie, you are still held in suspense to the very end.
This thriller focuses on Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) – a forward thinking mob boss whose effort to remain relevant in his neighborhood inspires him to plant a mole, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) – a kid he spotted and mentored – in the State police for selfish reasons. The State police unit run by the level-headed Capt. Queenan (Martin Sheen) and the impulsive Sgt. Dignam (Mark Wahlberg) enlists Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio), an ace police cadet with family ties to the mob to infiltrate Frank’s gang.
As Collin rises in the police force and Billy rises in the mob, the stakes become exponentially high as loyalties become tested with near impossible requests. The unexpected twist and turns sends the two men (Collin and Billy) to lead double lives while questioning their personal safety and life decisions amidst the lies and deceptions.
Ultimately, the story revolves around a moral labyrinth of good vs evil and re-emphasizes that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. “The departed”, one of Scoresese’s best movies which won 98 awards out of 140 nominations including Oscar awards for Best Picture & Best Director (Martin Scorsese) and Best Supporting acting role (Mark Wahlberg) , is a must watch if you haven’t seen it.
Seen the movie? Let me know what you think.
